Overview
Whittet-Higgins NT-18 Locknut
The Whittet-Higgins NT-18 is a small-profile inch-series bearing locknut that secures, locks, and retains bearings and power transmission assemblies on a threaded shaft. Its reduced outside diameter and thickness make it ideal for limited-space applications and lighter axial loading.
The NT-18 is matched with WT series lockwashers: a washer tab seats into one of the locknut's many slots to provide accurate angular positioning and prevent loosening from vibration, shock, and torque. Machined from carbon steel, it installs without special tools on both soft and hardened shafts and meets and exceeds ANSI / ABMA 8.2-1999.
Key features
- Manufactured from carbon steel
- Small-profile design with smaller diameter and thickness for limited-space applications
- Matched with WT series lockwashers to lock and retain bearings and power transmission assemblies
- Numerous locking positions for accurate angular positioning
- Prevents assembly loosening from vibration, shock, and torque
- Meets and exceeds ANSI / ABMA 8.2-1999 specification
- Maximum operating temperature of 300 degrees F
- Effective on both soft and hardened shafts; no special tools required for installation
- Made in USA and RoHS compliant

About the brand
About Whittet-Higgins
Bearing locknuts, lockwashers and retaining devices from Rhode Island since 1914.
Henry Whittet and John Higgins founded the Whittet-Higgins Manufacturing Company in 1914 in the basement of a mill on Congress Avenue in Providence, Rhode Island, making super-precision bearing retaining components and machined parts for local machine builders such as Brown & Sharpe.
In 1967 the company was sold to a young mechanical engineer, and in 1969 it moved to 33 Higginson Avenue in Central Falls, Rhode Island, where it still makes its products. Its first line of 66 locknuts and lockwashers has grown to more than 4,300 standard parts, made on robotic CNC systems.
Besides the standard N/AN and KM locknuts with W and MB lockwashers, Whittet-Higgins makes its own self-locking designs: Bearhug prevailing-torque locknuts, Bearlok, Shoelok and Tangentlok clamping locknuts, clampnuts and splitnuts, plus adapter sets, clamp collars and installation tools. The company is family owned and operated.

FAQ
NT-18 questions & answers
What size is the Whittet-Higgins NT-18?
The Whittet-Higgins NT-18 is a locknut. Thread: 3.527-12 (89.59 mm, 12 threads per inch). Outside diameter: 4.312 in (109.52 mm). Face diameter: 4.000 in (101.60 mm). Width: 0.385 in (9.78 mm). These are Whittet-Higgins' maximum sizes from its spec sheet.
What thread does the NT-18 fit?
The Whittet-Higgins NT-18 fits a 3.527-12 right-hand shaft thread (89.59 mm, 12 threads per inch).
Does the NT-18 need a lockwasher?
Yes. Whittet-Higgins matches the NT-18 with the WT-18 lockwasher. The washer's inner tab sits in the shaft's keyway, and after tightening one of its outer tangs is bent into a slot of the locknut so the nut cannot turn.
What temperature can the NT-18 take?
Whittet-Higgins rates the Locknut NT series (small profile) for up to 300 °F (149 °C).
What is the NT-18 made of?
Locknut: carbon steel.
Is there a drawing or CAD model of the NT-18?
Yes. Whittet-Higgins publishes a part print (PDF) and a 3D CAD model (STEP) for the NT-18. The drawing on this page is made from the same catalog dimensions.
How do I install the NT-18?
Follow Whittet-Higgins' assembly instructions for this part (PDF). Fit the lockwasher with its inner tab in the shaft keyway, tighten the locknut to the bearing maker's preload, then bend the nearest tang into a slot.
Is this a genuine Whittet-Higgins locknut?
Yes. Apollo Industries is an authorized Whittet-Higgins retailer, and every Whittet-Higgins part we sell is genuine, made by Whittet-Higgins in Central Falls, Rhode Island, USA.
Do you ship the NT-18 the same day?
In-stock orders placed by 3 PM EST ship the same day. All orders over $100 ship free by ground with code FREESHIP.
