In 1883 Friedrich Fischer built the ball grinding machine in Schweinfurt, Germany — the machine that first made it possible to produce perfectly round steel balls in volume. That invention is the origin of the rolling bearing industry, and the company it founded became FAG.

FAG joined the Schaeffler Group in 2001 and now sits alongside INA and LuK. Today the brand covers deep groove ball, cylindrical roller, spherical roller, tapered roller, angular contact, needle roller and mounted bearings, plus super-precision spindle bearings for machine tools.

FAG technologies and designations

The suffixes stamped on a FAG bearing tell you exactly what you are getting. Here are the ones you will meet most often.

  • X-life

    X-life performance class

    Schaeffler's premium designation. Tighter internal geometry and improved surface quality raise the dynamic load rating, which extends calculated rating life at the same load.

  • TVP / TVP2

    Glass-fibre reinforced polyamide cage

    A one-piece PA66 cage reinforced with glass fibre. Lighter than brass, quieter at speed, and tolerant of misalignment and acceleration.

  • C3

    C3 radial internal clearance

    Greater than normal clearance, specified where the inner ring runs hotter than the outer — electric motors, fans and pumps — so the bearing does not preload itself as it expands.

  • 2RSR

    Contact seals both sides

    Rubbing lip seals that keep grease in and contamination out. Specified for washdown, dusty and wet environments where a shield would not hold up.

  • E / E1

    Reinforced design

    An optimised internal design with larger or more numerous rolling elements, raising load capacity within the same envelope dimensions.

  • P4 / P2

    Super-precision spindle bearings

    Tight running accuracy classes for machine tool spindles, where runout and thermal stability decide the finish on the part.
