Belt Hog · How It Works
The Belt Hog is a precision laser pulley alignment tool that mounts directly inside the sheave groove — exactly where your V-belts run — so what you measure is what your drive actually feels. Two laser heads project and receive simultaneously, giving you a real-time read on every type of belt misalignment in a single setup.
When the projected laser line drifts off parallel to the target's center line, your drive has a vertical angular misalignment — a 'twist' between the driving and driven sheaves. Even small twists chew through V-belts, generate heat, and bleed efficiency.
What to do: Shim or rotate the movable machine until both laser lines run parallel to the target center.
The laser line is parallel to the target center line but sits above or below it — the two sheaves are running on different planes. Offset misalignment forces belts to track sideways on the way around the pulley, accelerating sidewall wear.
What to do: offset misalignment by laterally shifting one machine (typically the driven unit) left or right until the pulley faces are in the same plane and fully parallel.
If the stationary-side laser line is parallel to the target center but offset to one end, the sheaves are angled toward or away from each other in the horizontal plane. This is the classic 'toed-in / toed-out' condition — it loads one belt edge harder than the other and shortens belt life dramatically.
What to do: Pivot the movable machine on its mounting bolts until both ends of the laser line sit on the target center.
Both laser lines land precisely on the center line of the opposing target — on the movable side and the stationary side — confirming the drive is true in every plane. Belts now ride flat in the groove, run cooler, and deliver the full service life their manufacturer specs promise.
What to do: Lock the movable machine, recheck after the first run-in, and log the alignment for your maintenance record.
