Overview
Whittet-Higgins BH-07 Bearhug retaining nut
The Whittet-Higgins BH-07 BEARHUG is a self-locking bearing locknut that threads onto a bearing-mount shaft to axially position, preload, and retain bearings and other components against a shoulder. It is prevailing-torque self-locking through an integral heat-stabilized polymer locking ring, which resists loosening from vibration, shock, and torque while eliminating the separate lockwasher and the need to cut or repair a shaft keyway.
Because it grips on the threads without a tang, the BEARHUG does not damage shaft threads and allows infinite adjustment and preloading. It is balanced for higher-speed, high-precision assemblies and meets and exceeds the specifications of ANSI/ABMA 8.2-1999.
Key features
- Carbon steel locknut with a heat-stabilized polymer locking ring
- Prevailing-torque self-locking; resists loosening from vibration, shock, and torque
- Easier and faster to install than a traditional locknut-and-lockwasher set
- Infinite adjustment and preloading capability without damaging shaft threads
- Eliminates the need to cut or repair a shaft keyway
- Balanced for higher-speed applications
- Meets and exceeds ANSI/ABMA 8.2-1999
- Maximum operating temperature 160 degrees F
- Manufactured in the USA and RoHS compliant

About the brand
About Whittet-Higgins
Bearing locknuts, lockwashers and retaining devices from Rhode Island since 1914.
Henry Whittet and John Higgins founded the Whittet-Higgins Manufacturing Company in 1914 in the basement of a mill on Congress Avenue in Providence, Rhode Island, making super-precision bearing retaining components and machined parts for local machine builders such as Brown & Sharpe.
In 1967 the company was sold to a young mechanical engineer, and in 1969 it moved to 33 Higginson Avenue in Central Falls, Rhode Island, where it still makes its products. Its first line of 66 locknuts and lockwashers has grown to more than 4,300 standard parts, made on robotic CNC systems.
Besides the standard N/AN and KM locknuts with W and MB lockwashers, Whittet-Higgins makes its own self-locking designs: Bearhug prevailing-torque locknuts, Bearlok, Shoelok and Tangentlok clamping locknuts, clampnuts and splitnuts, plus adapter sets, clamp collars and installation tools. The company is family owned and operated.

FAQ
BH-07 questions & answers
What size is the Whittet-Higgins BH-07?
The Whittet-Higgins BH-07 is a Bearhug self-locking locknut. Thread: 1.376-18 (34.95 mm, 18 threads per inch). Outside diameter: 2.063 in (52.40 mm). Face diameter: 1.813 in (46.05 mm). Width: 0.500 in (12.70 mm). These are Whittet-Higgins' maximum sizes from its spec sheet.
What thread does the BH-07 fit?
The Whittet-Higgins BH-07 fits a 1.376-18 right-hand shaft thread (34.95 mm, 18 threads per inch).
Does the BH-07 need a lockwasher?
No. The Whittet-Higgins BH-07 locks itself: a heat-stabilized polymer locking ring grips the shaft thread (prevailing torque). It needs no lockwasher and no keyway in the shaft.
What tool installs the BH-07?
Whittet-Higgins' BAS-07 assembly socket: it holds all four spanner slots and takes a square-drive ratchet or torque wrench. To clean or repair the shaft thread first, Whittet-Higgins makes the RTD-07 rethreading die.
What temperature can the BH-07 take?
Whittet-Higgins rates the Bearhug BH series (inch) for up to 160 °F (71 °C).
What is the BH-07 made of?
Locknut: carbon steel; Locking ring: heat-stabilized polymer.
Is there a drawing or CAD model of the BH-07?
Yes. Whittet-Higgins publishes a part print (PDF) and a 3D CAD model (STEP) for the BH-07. The drawing on this page is made from the same catalog dimensions.
How do I install the BH-07?
Follow Whittet-Higgins' assembly instructions for this part (PDF). In short: lubricate the shaft thread, turn the Bearhug on with its smaller bevel face toward the bearing, and tighten it with a spanner wrench or the BAS-07 assembly socket to the bearing maker's preload. Do not use it to push parts along the shaft.
Is this a genuine Whittet-Higgins locknut?
Yes. Apollo Industries is an authorized Whittet-Higgins retailer, and every Whittet-Higgins part we sell is genuine, made by Whittet-Higgins in Central Falls, Rhode Island, USA.
Do you ship the BH-07 the same day?
In-stock orders placed by 3 PM EST ship the same day. All orders over $100 ship free by ground with code FREESHIP.
Can I get quantity pricing or buy tax-exempt?
Yes. Apollo offers special rates for businesses and bulk orders. Use Request a quote on this page or call (248) 429-9073.
