Overview
Whittet-Higgins NL-10 Locknut
The Whittet-Higgins NL is a left-handed bearing locknut machined from carbon steel to the ANSI/ABMA 8.2-1999 specification. Its left-hand thread keeps clockwise-rotating assemblies from backing off under vibration, shock, and torque, while it is matched with W series lockwashers to secure, lock, and retain bearings and power transmission components on the shaft.
Numerous locking positions deliver accurate angular positioning, and the nut installs on soft or hardened shafts with no special tools required. Rated to a maximum operating temperature of 300°F, it is manufactured in the USA and RoHS compliant.
Key features
- Carbon steel construction
- Left-hand thread prevents clockwise-rotating assemblies from loosening

About the brand
About Whittet-Higgins
Bearing locknuts, lockwashers and retaining devices from Rhode Island since 1914.
Henry Whittet and John Higgins founded the Whittet-Higgins Manufacturing Company in 1914 in the basement of a mill on Congress Avenue in Providence, Rhode Island, making super-precision bearing retaining components and machined parts for local machine builders such as Brown & Sharpe.
In 1967 the company was sold to a young mechanical engineer, and in 1969 it moved to 33 Higginson Avenue in Central Falls, Rhode Island, where it still makes its products. Its first line of 66 locknuts and lockwashers has grown to more than 4,300 standard parts, made on robotic CNC systems.
Besides the standard N/AN and KM locknuts with W and MB lockwashers, Whittet-Higgins makes its own self-locking designs: Bearhug prevailing-torque locknuts, Bearlok, Shoelok and Tangentlok clamping locknuts, clampnuts and splitnuts, plus adapter sets, clamp collars and installation tools. The company is family owned and operated.

FAQ
NL-10 questions & answers
What size is the Whittet-Higgins NL-10?
The Whittet-Higgins NL-10 is a locknut. Thread: 1.967-18 (49.96 mm, 18 threads per inch). Outside diameter: 2.688 in (68.28 mm). Face diameter: 2.438 in (61.93 mm). Width: 0.510 in (12.95 mm). These are Whittet-Higgins' maximum sizes from its spec sheet.
What thread does the NL-10 fit?
The Whittet-Higgins NL-10 fits a 1.967-18 left-hand shaft thread (49.96 mm, 18 threads per inch). A left-hand thread keeps the nut from working loose where the shaft's rotation would loosen a right-hand nut.
Does the NL-10 need a lockwasher?
Yes. Whittet-Higgins matches the NL-10 with the W-10 lockwasher. The washer's inner tab sits in the shaft's keyway, and after tightening one of its outer tangs is bent into a slot of the locknut so the nut cannot turn.
What tool installs the NL-10?
Whittet-Higgins' BAS-10 assembly socket: it holds all four spanner slots and takes a square-drive ratchet or torque wrench. To clean or repair the shaft thread first, Whittet-Higgins makes the RTD-10 rethreading die.
What temperature can the NL-10 take?
Whittet-Higgins rates the Locknut NL series (left-handed) for up to 300 °F (149 °C).
What is the NL-10 made of?
Locknut: carbon steel.
Is there a drawing or CAD model of the NL-10?
Yes. Whittet-Higgins publishes a part print (PDF) and a 3D CAD model (STEP) for the NL-10. The drawing on this page is made from the same catalog dimensions.
How do I install the NL-10?
Follow Whittet-Higgins' assembly instructions for this part (PDF). Fit the lockwasher with its inner tab in the shaft keyway, tighten the locknut to the bearing maker's preload, then bend the nearest tang into a slot.
Is this a genuine Whittet-Higgins locknut?
Yes. Apollo Industries is an authorized Whittet-Higgins retailer, and every Whittet-Higgins part we sell is genuine, made by Whittet-Higgins in Central Falls, Rhode Island, USA.
Do you ship the NL-10 the same day?
In-stock orders placed by 3 PM EST ship the same day. All orders over $100 ship free by ground with code FREESHIP.
Can I get quantity pricing or buy tax-exempt?
Yes. Apollo offers special rates for businesses and bulk orders. Use Request a quote on this page or call (248) 429-9073.
