In 1883 Friedrich Fischer of Schweinfurt invented a machine that ground steel balls perfectly round in large volumes, the foundation of the rolling bearing industry. FAG, registered in 1905 as the acronym of Fischers Aktiengesellschaft, has been a Schaeffler product brand since 2006.
In 1911 FAG supplied all the ball bearings in the Marmon "Wasp", winner of the first Indianapolis 500.
