Inventor of the self-aligning ball bearing and the spherical roller bearing.
SKF (AB Svenska Kullagerfabriken) was founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, on 16 February 1907, on one invention: the double-row self-aligning ball bearing of Sven Wingquist, a maintenance supervisor at a Gothenburg textile factory. The factory stood on clay, so the building moved, the line shafts fell out of alignment and the rigid ball bearings of the day overheated and failed. Wingquist's bearing let the shaft run out of line without shortening its service life.
SKF invented the spherical roller bearing in 1919 and launched the spherical roller thrust bearing in 1939, the CARB toroidal roller bearing in 1995 and SKF Explorer bearings in 1999. Explorer bearings have optimized internal designs and surfaces that reduce friction and heat and carry heavier loads, for a longer service life.
In 1926 an SKF subsidiary, AB Volvo, built a trial series of cars; the first Volvo rolled out in Gothenburg in 1927.
